The Indian Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India contested during April and May of every year by teams representing Indian cities. The 2016 season of the IPL was the ninth edition of the tournament. This year’s IPL saw some fresh names crowned as champions. Rising Pune Supergiants, led by captain Steve Smith, won their maiden IPL title after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs in the final at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 29, 2016.

It was a topsy-turvy season for RPS who finished second from bottom in the league stage but rose to the occasion when it mattered the most. Smith led from the front with his bat scoring 401 runs in 16 matches at an average of 44.55 which included four half-centuries. In the final, he played a crucial knocks of 51 runs off 36 balls to help his team post a competitive total of 162/4 in 20 overs.

RPS bowlers then did a brilliant job to defend the total as they restricted RCB to just 139/6 in 20 overs. pacer Jaydev Unadkat was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his exemplary bowling performance (2/25) whereas spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was named ‘Player of the Series’ for his all-round contribution with both bat and ball throughout the tournament.

The Chennai Super Kings are the 2013 champions of the Indian Premier League. They defeated the Mumbai Indians in a thrilling final, which went down to the wire. The two teams were evenly matched throughout the tournament, and it was fitting that they should face each other in the final.

The Chennai Super Kings were led by their captain MS Dhoni, who was in scintillating form throughout the tournament. He top-scored for his team in the final, with an unbeaten 79* off just 48 balls. This was a typical Dhoni innings, full of big hits and intelligent batting. He took his team home with 14 balls to spare, and won them their second IPL title.

The Mumbai Indians put up a brave fight, but ultimately came up short. Their captain Rohit Sharma played a brilliant knock of 68* off 44 balls, but it wasn’t enough to get them over the line. Lasith Malinga bowled very well in the death overs, but he couldn’t prevent Dhoni from hitting the winning runs.

This was a great advert for the IPL, and it is clear that this tournament is here to stay. With two such evenly matched teams contesting the final, it was always going to be a close game. In the end, it was Dhoni’s experience and cool head that won his team the title.

This win also meant that Chennai Super Kings became the first team in IPL history to win two titles. Mumbai Indians were the defending champions, but they failed to make it to the playoffs this year.

2009 IPL Winners

The inaugural season of the Indian Premier League saw the Rajasthan Royals crowned as champions. The team, led by Shane Warne, defeated the Chennai Super Kings in the final to secure the title.

The following year, the Deccan Chargers emerged victorious, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. The 2009 season also saw the addition of two new teams – the Pune Warriors and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala.
